This new design was a first in United States coinage. The design was unique in having no raised edge while all the devises and legends were incuse, recessed below the coins surface. Both the Quarter Eagle and the Half Eagle share the same design by sculptor Bela Lyon Pratt and were issued from 1908-1929. The design was not popular at the time and few were saved. Therefore high grade examples are quite rare.
